HERITAGE PHOTOGRAPHY GREECE
DEEP TIMESCAPES
Deep timescapes documents locations across Greece that show signs of prehistoric human activity. All of the photographs were taken by moonlight, which offers a unique, low-intensity illumination that reveals subtle details in these ancient sites. The choice of moonlight highlights the long span of time represented in the landscape—reminding us that the moon, nearly as old as the Earth, reflects sunlight in a way that connects us with our distant past.
In these images, the light captured is sunlight that has traveled roughly eight minutes to reach Earth and an additional 1.3 seconds to reflect off the moon. The exposures are long, meaning that the camera slowly collects light over time—a process that, in effect, gathers time itself. This gentle, diffuse illumination, combined with the extended exposure, provides clear, high-quality documentation of textures and forms while emphasizing the deep time these sites embody.
