MARATHON: LANDSCAPE AND MEMORY
Marathon: Landscape and Memory is a body of work that was developed in parallel with a commission to provide photographs for the book Battle of Marathon by K. Lagos and F. Karyanos. It includes work from a project which was first initiated 15 years ago and revived with the publication of the book. The book reconsiders the battle of Marathon presenting new evidence discovered by its authors.
Thus, this work is divided into two sequences subtitled The Evidence and The Monuments. The first series (The Evidence) consists of photographic documentation, accompanied by text, of topographical and archaeological evidence for the battle of 490 B.C. The second series (The Monuments) depicts landscapes of Marathon accompanied by passages drawn from a variety of texts – ancient, 19th century and modern. This series reveals how the natural landscape invokes the memories embedded in the texts and how the landscape itself becomes a monument embodying these accounts.
